Hidden Find: Churros-y Nice!

'T' and I love to go to new places and try out new munchers.
By new places, we meant places outside of shopping malls.

and so,
on a Friday evening, after dinner at home we decided to go down to GRUB for some Churros. The thing is, 'T' is a great fan of Churros but it's difficult to find places that sells GOOD Churros and GRUB happens to be one such place!

First Word: We'll be back!

Grub is located at Bishan Park 1, right beside Bishan Park Secondary School.

Service:

We called around 9pm, asking if they still have Churros.
( such rarity get sold out really quickly )
We were told they still have the desserts, however there's a long waiting list and the place closes at 9.45pm! ( last order ) - that's a large turn out considering that they only open for business in May 2013.

He very nicely offered to put our name on the waiting list and when 'T' and I arrived,
we were promptly seated.

The Food:

We decided to order the Churros as well as THIS:

Truffled Egg Cocotte with crispy parma ham and toasted foccacia.  - $7
ps:  They uses Organic Eggs.

Think of it like the western version of your favorite soft-boil eggs and bread.

This little baby is made up of poached egg nestled in watery soft boil egg shrouded in truffle oil. Instead of having to add your own soy-sauce, the fragrant of the egg is further enhanced by the yummy parma ham and sprinkle of spring onions.

Pair it up the nicely toasted foccacia that is all so soft and crunchy, and you get a hearty after dinner treat. lol

Churros - Our Motivation. - $8

We visited Grub to satisfy our cravings. To honest, $8 is the cheapest churros that we've come by so far. Previously we went to MaxBrenner @ Esplanade. It was equally nice just a tad expensive.

Alright, over here, the churros are shorter but there's easily 6 sticks of it to go around. Instead of chocolate and jam a-la Max Brenner, Grub provided us with vanilla.
Thumbs up for not making the sauces overly-sweet such that they robbed the churros of their taste but we can easily just eat the Churros on its own:)
We really dig the warm crispy sweet and tangy taste of the cinnamon coating the Churros and at only $8, we'll definitely be back!

In short, Grub is a place to BE at if you happen to be in the area.
It is like a source of warmth in the otherwise quiet Bishan Park.
They are big on organic food, good people that provides prompt and polite service.
Too bad we came after dinner and din't get to try the rest of their menu.
Most of the patrons were there for the Cider and Hand-Crafted Beer.
Seems really awesome, no?

Oh, and the best part is,
It is pet-friendly!
We spotted a cute bull-dog snugged beneath its owner's table.
Purrrfect, ya?

Have you been to Grub? Let us know what you think of this young and vibrant place!

Love,
S.

Do check out their opening hours!
They are closed on Mondays and every last Tuesday of the Month:D

Food: How I hated pasta mania.. And now not!!

It's  T today:))

The school holidays is almost over and the haze went away together with the holidays. Soon it will be back to school again for most ppl. But that's not really te point school hols or not life still continue.

So throughout my life I have been staying in the east and I think ever since Tampines mall opened many many years back a lot of my entertainment and dining have been done there. So if u didn't know, there is a pasta mania there. I still remember it was alright when I was in secondary school. Like a cheap and good source of fast food. I mean Mac and KFC and stuff are nvr really my normal meal then unlike many of my peers. So pastamania was a good option esp when dining out with friends.

Yet over the years, it just went from ok to bad to inedible. Like the other day when I had staff bonding there and tried their food again... I tell u.. I think I cook pasta 100 times better than their. It's tasteless for the aglio, and the tomato source taste more like vinegar. I almost puke out whatever I ate.
I swore off pastamania for a long time before that, and that trip back just makes it worse.

Until one time (actually I forgot when was it, I only remember it after a race), me and S went for pastamania at her hideout, northpoint. And i'm convince different outlet of pasta mania have super different standard. So 3 days ago, the 2 of us went back again, the one at northpoint. I was hoping that I can prove my theory right. Which is northpoint pastamania has a MUCH better cook than Tampines mall. AND I WAS PROVEN RIGHT!!

First up was the soup, ok nothing to rave about that.
Next is S's tuna bacon penne!! That's half eaten. Haha. I can't do photos like some other bloggers but one think I know here is I'm giving u reader the pic of exactly what we ate:) no added photoshop. The flavour was good. Good balance in taste. Only downside for S. - too little sauce. But for me, who's not a tomato sauce lover, it's really good enough:)

Next up:) my prawn with tomato aglio. I got this with a pacific rim set. So it $14.90 with a medium drink, the pasta, a soup and the side. First look, the pasta was really dry. Can't really see from the picture. It's covered by chilli and cheese. That's how I like my Aglio:) but when I stir it. Ta-da. It's wet inside, wet enuff. And it has a strong flavour of the garlic. To me it's good. Not out of this world good nut with that kind of price, I dun really expect something of like say pasta inc. standard.

Last was this! The side. Cheesy garlic bread. For all those who eats pasta mania, this is a whole lot different from the normal garlic bread, at least in northpoint (I can't say for other outlet cos their standard are really very different). There's 2 cheese on it. And most important, it's crispy on the outside but soft on the inside:) one word, YUMS!!

In conclusion, if u stay up in the north like S and u have really nothing to eat and craving for cheaper pasta, go down to pastamania at northpoint. It's worth the money. But if u live in the east, please dun go to the pastamania in Tampines already. It's really disgusting. If ppl stop eating that I guess they will improve their standard:)

Food: Egg Tarts :)

It's tuesday, going on Wednesday.
How can it be mid-week already!

'T' stayed over on Sunday night,
and we spent our Monday catching 6 episodes of HK drama ( we originally planned to go to the gym and have breakfast ) well, that certainly didn't happen.

Nevertheless, we did accomplish one thing on our agenda - we went in search of Portuguese egg tarts!

We found these pretty delish ones at 198 Tanjong Katong Road.
It's a mere 15 mins walk from Dakota station and near TKGS:)

Couldn't help but snagged 14 for the families.

A close up on them. we sat outside the shop and munch on 2 before heading back to Mama T's for dinner :)

We thought it was pretty nice. The crust is warm and fluffy and I like that the egg custard is not overly sweet but still fragrant:))

Do give them a try!

Food: Tanuki, Orchard Central.

First Word: Disappointing much.

It was our first saturday back from Hong Kong and "T" and I were craving for all foods apart from Chinese Food.
While I was busy at work, "T" ran a search on Japanese food and up came Tanuki Raw at Orchard Central.

We decided to give it a try since it is the sister bar of Standing Sushi Bar which was pretty awesome.

However, Tanuki was a REAL DISAPPOINTMENT. We are definitely not heading back and yes I am not mincing my word.

1. The Service.

I absolutely am frustrated with the service crew. We arrived around 7-ish to find Tanuki packed with people, only to realize that majority of the crowd was there for the Happy Hour Promotion.

Between 5 - 8pm, Tanuki is having the following promotion:

$10 Drinks ( Red Wine, ,Martini. Cocktails) + $3 Sashimi + $2 Oysters.

Not a bad deal I must say, but too bad, We were not there for the drinks nor the oysters.  We were in search of good quality Japanese food - which we did not get.

Instead, service was slow. The service staff has smiles wiped off all their faces, except for this Indian guy
( sorry, we didn't get your name). We even had to ask like twice or thrice to get more tea ( I almost died of thirst) and even to repeatedly call for our bill!

Goodness, it wasn't like we were rude or that we were there only for the promotion. We ordered proper meal for goodness sake. Even typing about this right  now frustrates me.

Talking about the orders were even worse.

We got ourselves:

1. Sashimi Salad
2. Ocean Rockefeller
3. Some Maki
4. Yakitori Don.

and this is the expected order that we want our food to arrive. Isn't that like common sense?
YOU DO NOT SERVE YOUR SALAD LAST.
YOU SERVE YOUR APPETIZERS AND STARTERS FIRST BEFORE YOU EVEN SERVE YOUR MAINS.
Can you imagine our horror when our yakitori don arrived first and my sashimi salad arrived last?
Super frustrating.

2. The food.

Alright, to give credits to the food, here are some pictures of what we ate and how we feel about it.

Our maki arrived first : Pales in comparison to similar maki over at Standing Sushi Bar. However, for the price of $9, it can be pretty interesting. Floss + Mayo + Salmon atop fried salmon skin. We thought the rice were overly soft ? ( almost like glutinous rice) and tasteless. It could have been better if the maki were smaller in size with more slices so that one can better enjoy the fusion of the flavor.
Next our yakitori don arrived before our salad or our starter. It was shocking.
The chicken tastes like gong-bao chicken I'll get at a Chinese Tzi-Char stall but one of a milder taste. The taste of the red-green peppers is too overwhelming. We wonder if it was intentional.

Still, kudos to the lotus chips and the not-so-moist-rice. Otherwise, really forgettable.

This ocean rockfeller arrived shortly after our yakitori don. 3 of these cost us $12.
The taste? Interesting fusion of salmon and mince scallop and hokkigai. We personally thought the meats did not tie in well with the cheese. The scallop were so minced and the salmon were like raw, the entire taste is pretty weird to us.
Final verdict? - Can give it a try though if you are interested to know how it taste like. No one can really resist the idea of scallops with cheese.

and so this beautiful looking sashimi salad arrived last.
The salad dressing has really strong wasabi flavors in it. ( Bad news for the both of us since we do not even remotely like the taste of wasabi.) Most of the better Japanese Restaurants that we visited will ask us if we will like wasabi in our dressing or even in our sushi ( Sakae sushi do ask okay! ) Hence, another example of them being less than attentive to the needs of their clients.

The Maguro ( Tuna) is tasteless! It is like frozen and then thawed, resulting in a total loss of taste. I couldn't take another bite of it and "T" finished them all, leaving me the salmon. Hence, to give them their due credit,
their salmon is indeed nice. Sweet and chewy. But that's that. Even their meager amount of Swordfish was forgettable.

In essence, we were just very disappointed. We spent $61 on this meal and we know we are not going to give it another chance.

Nevertheless to give it its due credit: Maybe coming for its happy hour is a better idea. Based on our observation, 90% of the in-house gas were enjoying fresh salmon and oysters. Maybe that will be more worthy of your money. :)

Food in Hong Kong 2.- The Hits and Misses.

Since "T" had largely described the awesome food that we had in Hong Kong in the previous post : Desserts, Tea and Eggs!, I thought I'll share a little bit more on  our accomodation, the street food as well as what NOT to eat/do over there !

1. Where we stayed - The CityView Hongkong

"T" and I stayed at The City View Hotel in Yau Ma Tei during our trip. In our opinion, despite it being pretty small and a tad old, the location of the hotel is pretty awesome! It comes will complimentary wi-fi too! So thumbs up on that.

Location wise, we are located right in front of the MTR stop, Exit A1.

Surrounded by Fire Station, School and Hospital. ( Very safe)
We are also right smack in the middle of MongKok ( 5 minutes walk away from all the food, crowd, shopping -
Sic: Nu Ren Jie ( lady's market) , Fa Yuen Street ( Sports Street) , etc  )

and 10 minutes walk away from Temple Street.
In fact during our stay in Hong Kong, "T" and I walked hell a lot.
There was this afternoon where we walked from Tsim Tsa Tsiu all the way back to Yau Mei Tei. That's a total of 3 MTR stops.

In short, Hong Kong is pretty accessible and walkable. When you walk, you discover stuffs. So why not?

Tip: If you are travelling in large group, you might want to reconfirm your booking early, so that they are can try to arrange for all of you to be on the same level.
For us: They upgraded our room for free!

Couples:  Good to get the premier room, it's a tad more spacious, even though it's smaller than many of the hotels in Sg.

There is no complimentary air port shuttle in Hong Kong, especially for the Hotels on Kowloon's end.

It is really very accessible via the MTR, if you don't intent to take the expensive air port shuttle or taxi.

To get to CityView : Buy your Octopus Card. Make sure you have at least 100HKD inside it. Take the airport express to Tsing Yi. Change on to the red line and stop at Lai King. Change over and stop at Yau Mei Tei :)

2. The "Famous" Dessert Place - Hui Lau San

First Word: Passable. Not Fantastic.

When you google "famous hong kong dessert" - you will  no doubt see the name Hui Lau San appearing in your results page and they are literally every where in Hong Kong.

In short: A lot of franchise.

As do all franchise, poor quality management will only give you passable food. "T" , me and his parents ordered a platter of sort to try out some of their more popular desserts.

As you can see, it is largely mango-based. I absolutely love their mango - sago dessert. It is similar to the mango-pomelo back here in Singapore, except that it is extra chilled. Hence, a total thirst quencher in summer.

"T"'s parents absolutely love the mochi. So much so that we had another serving of it after this order! The mochi doesn't sticks to your mouth, and is extra chewy! The best part is, it oozes out mango filling with each bite. Hence, definitely a thumbs up from us.

Erm, the mango ice -cream thinggie? It is just so forgettable. I thought King's Mango Ice Cream was much better. So yeah, you can give it a try to satisfy your curiosity.

2. Street Food!

 - Mong Kok's Curry Fish Ball + Fried Cuttle Fish.

- Burger King's Sweet Potato Criss Cut Fries

 - Mong Kok's Che Zai Mian!

First Word: DIE DIE MUST TRY.

Alright. What is Hong Kong Without Street Food right ?

Babe and I love to explore the night life of the places we visited.
Especially the street fares that comes alive at night.

For aspiring visitors to Hong Kong,

it is truly a city that never sleeps.
Even on Week Days,
the activity along the streets of Mong Kok only ceases after 11pm.

This Stall Featured here is located at the end of the Mong Kok/ lady's Street.

It is across the road from a mall that has a  Haggen Daz and Starbucks.
You definitely won't miss it, because it also sells smelly tofu? The smell is very distinctive.
We absolutely adore the curry fish ball and the cuttle fish. It is a must have and we had them every single night since we discovered them!.

Whenever we are overseas, "T" and I are always curious about their fast food and how it can be different from ours. However, this encounter in BK was like a lucky find.
We were craving for some coke around 11-ish and thought we'll pop in and get a drink, when we saw these lovely criss-cut fries.
They are extremely sweet and crunchy. I can't stop munching on them!

Note: They very seldom carry chilli sauce in HK's fast food chain, and they speak little English. So do learn to read the Chinese words, it'll make things easier for you to both speak and read what's on the menu:)

**
On one of our days out alone without the family, "T" and I decided to go in search of Che Zai Mian or coolie noodles in Hong Kong and we found a pretty decent one right at the start of FA YUEN STREET or Sports Street. It is opposite the Hong Kong's Turf Club Betting Station.

I was initially apprehensive about it's taste and man, I was totally blown away after tasting it.

The concept is similar to our Yong Tau Foo in Sg, except that the soup base is darker but sweeter.
Babe and I chose their Pork Balls, Radish, Pork Intestine and Fish ball. We pair it with thick rice noodles or our laksa noodles. I tell you : IT IS HEAVENLY.

There is a lot of variety to choose from.

MUST ORDER: Fish Ball + Radish

This is the place we ate at. We couldn't get a proper shot because I was taking it across the road in front of the Turf Club Betting Station and the security guard was staring down at me. The place of interest is the one with the bright sign board.

3. Dim Sum at Wong Tai Sin.

First Word:  Best Service + Best Dim Sum, Better than Tim Ho Wan + Best Local Feel.

When in Hong Kong, one will definitely want to eat Dim Sum, right? "T"'s family went to Tim Ho Wan for dinner one night and was sorely disappointed by it. The dim sum were either served cold or were too salty.

The next morning, we went to pray at the famous Wong Tai Sin Temple. We alighted at the Wong Tai Sin MTR stop and walked through the public housing, above, ( HDB in SG) and found ourselves in front of this dim sum place.

The place was packed with elderly having their morning tea. Yet, when the lady boss saw our arrival, she shifted everyone just to clear a table for 10 for us, despite us telling her we can always sit outside.
She insisted and to our surprise, none of the elderly complained! I tell you, this sort of service standard is very rare in Hong Kong.

Anyways, what must you order over there?

MUST TRY: Steam carrot cake. - It is very fragrant and sweet with very little taste enhanced by the shrooms or char siew. This is very rare. In Singapore, most of our carrot cakes are pan fried or otherwise, bland unless the taste is further enhanced by friend shrimps and char siew.

 Misses:

1. Seafood - Lai Liu Har. ( Pissing Prawn)

If you watched a lot of Hong Kong Drama or Variety Show like we do, you will definitely hear of Lai Liu Har.
On our last night in HK, we visited a seafood place along Temple Street to try out their Da Pai Dong, similar to our Tzi Char.

First Word: EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTING.
We were in a group of 10 and the shop owner gave us 2 choices:

3 for 120HKD
1 for 120 HKD.

Naturally, the size of the prawns will differ. Yet, we decided to order 9 of the 3 for 120HKD to try, since we are going to order other dishes right? The shop owner tried to dissuade us and push us for the 1 for 120 HKD one and when we stood our grounds, she showed us attitude. =_=

Anws, the prawn is really too crazy. It looks like a cray-fish but have meat that is only a quarter of the normal prawns I have for steamboat.
At least when I ate a wanton, it has much more prawns!!

We paid around $90 for this meal of prawns, vege , fried rice and a stewed lotus with pork dish. It was definitely not satisfying at all.

 2. Dining at City Gate Outlet Mall - Federal Palace.

I just want to drop a short word on this. When you are in City- Gate to do your shopping and wondering where to eat, please avoid Federal Palace.

Despite their nice interior. Their service standards are low. They throw their dishes around and when clearing the table, they will just splash hot water on the lady susan and wipe it clean. =_=

Their dim sum is worse than some of those that we have in Singapore. If you really have no choice, order their hor fun or fried rice. It is pretty interesting. :)

alrighty, I think that should be all from me I guess. In short, we really did enjoy Hong Kong very much despite the misses. Please be mentally prepared for bad service, it is normal. But the good food and shopping will make up for it definitely.

Just a few last word from me for all couples or people intending to visit Hong Kong :

  • They have no toilets in their malls except for their international big malls : E.g. IFC and Langham palace. If really in need, ask where is the nearest washroom, they will gladly point you to the public toilet, fast food restaurant or in the case of some malls, one can wait out the toilets meant for tenants and when someone exit, you enter. Simple:)
  • Minimum top up on your octopus card is HKD 50
  • Book the crystal cable car ride to Lantau island before your intended trip. They have specific timings and you don't have to queue for long.  When on Lantau island, MUST eat their beancurd. It is silky smooth.
  • When in Disneyland, prepare to queue. There's only fast pass for 3 of the attractions. The food is pretty yummy, but it can be very expensive.
  • You can check in at the airport really early and shop inside. Their food is pretty good! Also allow yourself ample time to get to your departure gates. Some of those departure gates requires one to take a shuttle train to the departure gate:)
  • It is always good to read up on the place before you visit, there is a lot of helpful links on line. Otherwise,Hong Kong is pretty safe, interesting and trust your gut feel when it comes to food! It worked really well for us.

We really enjoyed Hong Kong, and we can't wait to be back to explore more!

love,

Snail.

More about us and food from our little family trip to HK

Let me talk more about ourselves:)

Not really someone who writes very well, so please pardon my lack of flair, lack of good grammar and lack of good vocab. Basically, today u are going to hear it from the tortoise's pov. If u haven known (and I'm pretty sure u dun), there's 2 writers here, Tortoise (me, the bf/husband to be) and Snail (her, the gf/ wife to be). So do look out for wat we have to say about some eating places, short trip or watsoever, I mean for all I know nobody will read anything written here, which I guess is highly probable:) anyway, we dun plan to be a ladyironchef or a xiaxue, we're just writing to share wat we have to share and if u like it do keep reading:)

Anyway, 2 of us have just return from our family trip to HK.
Really had a lot of fun, like a lot a lot of fun. Went there for 5 days and return to our little island to realise our neighbor have just whack us with a hell lot of smoke. We can't blame anyone I think, I mean, seriously.. Can the govt do anything about it? NOOO.. It's impossible to do anything about it. The wind wan to blow the wind to our direction wat can they do? Call god and ask him to change direction? Or ask all our minister to blow the haze away?? Ask our neighbor to do something about it. Stop blaming the govt. It's like I'm sure u dun scold ur parent if u step on the shit of your neighbour's pet right.. anyway that's beside the point.

Our trip to HK is the key for this post. Especially the food!!! Alright.. so I guess I will put up some stuff to share with everyone. First up!! we went to this place in central.

It's on a small street known as Gage Road; on the right of Aberdeen road. We had a tomato macaroni with pork chop.
It's awesome and that coming from someone who dun even eat tomato base pasta, I think u should know how good it is. Snail had it and she finish almost everything. Tortoise prefer something more simple, I went for bun instead. It butter with condense milk crispy.

It's really really nice. It's so nice that I only shared 2 mouth of it with Snail (I'm sorry lah :( ) The bun is like crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Only bad thing, the place is not that easy to go to so I shall now provide u a map. It's somewhere near the 55 that balloon.

The auntie whom we sat with also recommended this place call ABC bakery somewhere nearby as well. The street name is in chinese so go ask around, it's opp a famous tea shop:)

The other place I'm going to recommend is something that I guess is plastered all over the internet world. Australia Dairy Co.

The scramble eggs... They melt in ur mouth.. U can really taste the eggs. put a bit of pepper over it.. YUMS!!! this is wat u will read everywhere.. Trust me.

They are really good at making that. But tortoise and snail.. are of course very adventurous and awesome.. we always try more:) and now I shall recommend to u their french toast.

On the menu, it written as fa lan xi dou. So look out for that. The bread is thick and the layer of egg is very.. how do I put it... Delicious I guess. and together with butter and the honey it is food orgasm in ur mouth. This place is at 47,49 Parkes street near Jordan MTR.

And one last place before Tortoise go into his shell and sleep is 2/3 shop front away, known as ba ji desert. It's a traditional desert shop. Not like those that sell all the mango stuff but those that u see on HK dramas. It's really very nice.

Snail tried their sweet potatoes soup. Their soup is boiled till the point where it has the taste of the sweet potatoes itself. I dun think u can find something like that in Singapore. Tortoise, being a fan of this particular beancurd skin desert, of course tried that.

It is out of this world awesome. I can't describe it with word. I'm just going to tell u. GO TRY IT!!

So if u are going to HK soon, go try this places. There are a few more worth mentioning but I guess I'll keep it to other days. Time to sleep. The haze is getting into me:((

P.S.
To snail. I hope you had fun for the past 5 days with me by ur side. I'm really glad u are there with me. Every trip we take, we learn more about each other, and every trip I take with u, it always make me wan u more. I can't wait for the day that I can finally make u mine one and only wifey:) I'm really thankful that I have found u in my life. Even mummy tortoise say that I'm lucky. I love you:)

Father's Day 2013 - Melben Seafood

This is the second Father's Day dinner we celebrate together as a couple for my dad.

Last year, we had it over at Melben's and this year daddy requested to have it again there! ( he really loves their crab ) and so Melben it is.

For those who's not new to Melben, you'll know how insane the queue can get.
I wonder if it's the same on weekdays. hmm.

so here's a shot of the queue:
At 7pm, we were at the end of the queue.
We only got seated at around 8.30pm and were told that it'll take another 60 minutes for our food to be served.

But the good thing is,the food arrived within 30 minutes as we've ordered while queuing. Hence, it's not too bad.

We got ourselves:
1 chili crab
1 crab bee hoon + extra soup + extra noodles
1 Hei Chou ( fried prawn balls)
1 vegetable
1 fried rice
+ drinks
total bill: $174 for 5 pax.

The 2 crab dishes came up to $115.

Our verdict:
Come only for the CRABS!
Here's why:

They are all huge and meaty. The soup is really flavorful, rich and sweet.

So do pop by Melben Seafood at Ang Mo Kio Blk 232 when you feel like eating crab and is willing to part with the money.

Tip of the day:
Be Mentally Prepared to Queue for your food.
Come early if you want to eat at 7pm, if not one can end up only having dinner at 9:)
Oh! and bring things to entertain yourself while queuing!

Hope this helps!

love,
Snail.

First Post.

This is our first post and we thought we'll say hi! :)

as a young couple, we often get stucked on recommendations of places to go for eat out, celebrate anniversaries or special occasion in etc.

hence, we decided to just start this and share our experiences and hopefully others will share with us and give their comments too!

we'll be sharing the places we visited,
travelled to, ate at , partied in and do as a couple!

do let us know what you think! :)
